July 23rd ‘MOVEMENT, IMPROVISATION, UN-LEARNING AERIAL’ NATALIE OLEINIK AND SEBASTIAN KANN
WORKSHOP: ‘movement, improvisation, un-learning aerial’
23rd July 10:00 – 17:00
This workshop is donation. Pay what you can afford.
Natalie Oleinik and Sebastian Kann were trained in rope and hoop at the National school in Montréal. During this all-day workshop, Nat and Seb will involve interested aerialists in their research process, sharing in particular their climbing-net practice.
With the net as a framework, we will explore ways of improvising solo, duo, and group images. In the afternoon, we will experiment with extrapolating these techniques to each participant’s specialty apparatus.
The whole day will be informed by a spirit of experimentation and an ethos which challenges habit as well as preconceived notions of ‘the good and the beautiful’ in aerial. What else is there? What more is to be discovered?

July 29TH MANOR HOUSE PERFORMANCE BY NATALIE OLEINIK AND SEBASTIAN KANN
Natalie Oleinik and Sebastian Kann are our international residents here at the IACC 2017. On the 29th July they will present a sharing of their work which is in development. Please come along and support these artists and the IACC.
MANOR HOUSE is Natalie Oleinik and Sebastian Kann, two American circus artists working on improvisation and distributed authorship in aerial practice.
During their presentation at the IACC, they will share with us not only what they made but how they made it. Less a work-in-progress than a glimpse of process, this presentation is a freeze-frame of a duet practice in becoming. Please join us to witness the opening-out of aerial performance onto new territory, and if you’re inspired, stay for a short discussion afterwards
From the MANOR HOUSE working document:
“We take the aerial act as a starting point, stretching and distorting it beyond recognition, remaking it anew. What is a ‘normal’ aerial act? Almost always, the act stages a body moving through a set of practiced pathways, a body whose trajectory is totally predetermined. At the same time, the circus body is understood to be also the choreographer of the act, and the act is understood as a pure expression of the performer / choreographer. What creative possibilities are ruled out by these strict conventions? What ways of working are suggested by inverting such prescriptions: improvisation, instant creation, becoming the material of the other and not of oneself, short-circuiting the personal… Does this move us towards the border of circus and non-circus, and why does this contested zone tend to generate so much anxiety for circus artists and audiences?”

Vayu Aerial Yoga is a practice that has been developed to create space mentally and physically, by opening up the body through various postures using our custom designed yoga swing. The Vayu Swing is a support system and tool used to facilitate and understand alignment while creating space within the body. Through specific articulation of movement we incorporate strength and the lengthening of the muscles isometrically to create ore strength and balance. The Vayu practise takes the body to a much deeper level. Using the support of the swing we are able to challenge the body moving through various postures, as well as allowing the nervous system to relax, encouraging a letting go into complete surrender. Inverting the body while suspended in the air not only provides many physical benefits such as spinal decompression, it also expands the mind by creating confidence, overcoming fear and allowing change in the standard physical perception. We are able to explore this found freedom and awaken our inner child bringing a playful light energy to our hearts. It is truly the experience of floating meditation.
